A Most Boring (but hopefully useful) Post

Yep, this has got to be about the most boring topic ever, but maybe someone out there will find it ever so slightly useful.  I recently packed up my classroom and said my goodbyes.  I like to make sure everything is nicely tucked away, safe from dust and from wandering off.  When I cover my shelves, I first recycle any bulletin board paper that I take off my walls.

Instead of using fresh paper when I run out of what's on my walls, I use large plastic garbage bags from the custodian's closet.

It only took two bags to cover four shelves, and the bags are actually easier to manipulate than butcher paper.  I figure it's not a bad way to make sure everything is in tip top shape when I return in August.  Boring and hopefully useful too.

  1. I don't need this tip this year, but I hope to need it next year. :) Thanks for the idea.

  2. My custodian would freak out, they guard their trash bags because their budget is so low, good idea, but buy your own.

    1. Amy, it's good to know what kinds of resources are readily available for sure.

  3. Hi Tammy. Useful for sure! In the past, I've covered bulletin boards that I didn't want to take down too--to keep dust away and prevent fading.

  5. Great idea about recycling the bulletin board paper. I usually just throw it away...not this year. Thanks for sharing!

  6. Very useful! I use butcher paper and, well, it doesn't work so great. Seems like a waste of paper too. I"m going to try this idea this year!

    1. Sara, butcher paper isn't easy to manipulate at all, huh? I think you'll find bags much easier to handle.

  8. I like this tip, but I always find it so sad looking to see everything put away for the summer. Have a great summer though!

  10. Using fresh, clean bulletin board paper for covering shelves (then throwing it away!) makes me cringe! I like tablecloths for covering. I get them when they are on clearance for a dollar or something. I really like the heavy vinyl that are lined with the fuzzy cotton. They come in several sizes for your shelf covering needs. The heavy ones are so easy to use and they stay put. I also have some of the extremely cheap thin plastic table cloths. I have used mine for many years but the really cheap plastic ones do get destroyed more each year by the tape and staples I put into them. (Still better than wasting paper though!)

    1. Sharron, that's a great idea as well. I'm in agreement about bulletin board paper. That's why I recycle mine from my walls instead of using the fresh stuff.

  11. Thank you for the tips. This year I had to not only pack up but also move everything to another classroom in the other pod across the campus. Since I use material for my walls and I didn't think about trash bags...we got shrink wrap from Lowes and did it that way. Have a restful summer.
